A story is told about a desert monk of the early church, Abba Joseph. A young monk came to him and said, "As far as I can I say my prayers, I fast a little, try to live in peace and keep my thoughts pure. What else can I do?"
Abba Joseph stood up and spread out his hands toward heaven, and each of his fingertips was lit with flame. He said to the young monk, "If you want to, you can be totally fire."
Jamie prompted this :) Now you can have your recommended-reading list, chica. My favorites from the LJ library lists of the past few years.

Novels
- Joey Pigza books, by Jack Gantos. If you want a book which will describe what it's like to be hyperactive and impulsive, without dealing as much with adults as an Dr Holloway book, I'd spring for this.
- Day of Tears, Julian Lester. This was amazing. For a serious mood. A girl is sold away from her family; partially based on the biggest American slave auction.
- Son of Interflux, Gordan Korman. Goofy as all get out; I love it. Bad title, 80s cover, wonderful inside. :) (I just read one of the Amazon reviews, which called it "Zany but pointless." )
- Outside Over There, Maurice Sendak
- I Am Not Esther, Fleur Beale.
- Best Foot Forward, the sequel to...
Rules of the Road, Joan Bauer - The Nanny Diaries, by Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus, which I love and nails the pain of taking care of other people's children right on the head
- A Barrel of Laughs, A Vale of Tears, Jules Feiffer
- Twink, John Neufeld. I love John Neufeld. Short, strong books.
- Stuck in Neutral, Terry Trueman
- Don't Cramp My Style, ed. Lisa Rowe Fraustino. This is an anthology about periods.
- The Woman in the Dunes, Abe Kobo
- Waiting, Ha Jin
- La Grammaire est un chanson douce, Erik Orsenna
- Corelli's Mandolin, de Berniers. You know how I feel about this book.
- My Sister's Keeper. A girl is conceived for the purpose of being a one-time donor for her cancer-ridden sister, but the demands continue. At the age of 11, she refuses to cooperate any longer.
Graphics
- It's a Bird..., Steven Seagle & Teddy Kristiansen. A comic book writer is assigned to write about Superman, but has problems dealing with the concept of an invincible hero. He also is dealing with the awareness of a genetic disease that runs in his family, Huntington's Chorea. Page-long starts of Superman stories are interspersed between his narrative. Beautiful watercolors, and a touching story.
- Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, Marjane Satrapi
- Blankets, Craig Thompson. A true graphic novel.
- The entire Powers series, available at CMPL for you Metro Detroiters. Oh, please read it!
Non-fiction
- The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women, Naomi Wolf
- What Not to Wear. Funny body shape help? Simple, applicable advice? Yes.
- Maria, Maria von Trapp. Her writing style was pleasing, and she had an excellent story.
- The Japanese Educational Challenge, Merry White.
- Lies My Teacher Told Me, James Loewen. The good ol' classic.
- The Psychology of Everyday Things, by Donald Norman, which looks awesome.
- The Forgotten Medicine: the Mystery of Repentance by Archimandrite Seraphim Aleksiev
- Gender: Men, Women, and Feminism, Frederica Mathewes-Green.
- Them: Adventures with Extremists, Ron Jonson. Or Jon Ronson. One of these.
- The Island of the Colorblind, Oliver Sacks
- At the Corner of East and Now: A Modern Life in Ancient Christian Orthodoxy, Frederica Mathewes-Green
- The ADDed Dimension: Everyday Advice For Adults With ADD by Peggy Ramundo. More for people who already know they have ADD. Each page is a very small essay about dealing with an aspect of ADD. I love this book. I wish I owned it. When I'm feeling like the obstacles I face will never end (as, indeed, they won't), reading this book helps. The page-long essays are very readable for the distracted, and start with a hook quote.
